It has been really cold since Christmas. I was having to trek out to do the snow patrol on the out buildings, and unlike last year did not have to snowshoe out...yet. But I did get them out for a try on just in case. Then the new year struck with power. There I was sitting around working on orders a few here a few there. Then the emails started coming...and let me tell you business is booming. I could not be happier! I am particularly fond of the early morning phone calls...especially the panicking autocrat one. Fridays are my sleep in day...but not this past one. Needless to say I offered the autocrat a good deal and everyone will be happy...so it goes in January.
So like Tolstoy in the field, I have been laboring. You and I both know he did not have to do this, he chose to. He was a wealthy landowner and had few cares except for his obsessive writing and personal quirks. Besides my own quirks of and some writing, I choose to labor in the field of coinmaking.
I do this for two reasons. One, I need to make a little money to pay my bills while going to college. Two, it is a labor of love. After so many years of doing this work for others in the SCA, I have grown with it. I am just now hitting my stride. I learn more every day, and get up in the morning looking to get at the dies.
Tolstoy was aware that that those who worked the land became a part of it. I am becoming a part of my field too.
